I have a Japanese Wii that was bought in Dec 2006, it is fitted with a Wiikey 1.I haven't updated the Wii for at least 2 years (it's been in the cupboard for ages). Dave Hey, do yourself a favour and don't update, 4.3 is a pain and has no benefit for the user, was only designed to prevent homebrewing and modding etc.you'll never get nice coverflow loaders with a hardmod.
The fix includes a hardcoded BCA for NSMB game to enable owners of this title to play a backup of it using Wiikey 2. Be sure to check that the md5 has of the archive you downloaded matches the one posted on the prior to using this software!

According to the manufacturer, "Cloned Wiikeys will not accept the official software updates".
In contrast to that, there are little to no complains about clones not working.
It is one of many modchips available for the Wii by Nintendo and acts as a firmware replacement funneled through the debug serial port - tricking the DVD drive into believing that the backup is in fact legit, much like current Xbox 360 chips do.
